2008 East vs. West Volleyball Match
This year we had a TEN teams, a record turnout! The tournament was single elimination, non-rally scoring to 15.
First Place, for a repeat win and holders of the perpetual trophy for another year was awarded to the WEST - LOVERS team anchored by Weston and Trenton Butt, including the same members as last year; Adam Running, Jacob Meader, Jordan and Kelsey.
Second, and still holding their own, AARP (2) (squared), this year anchored by Doug Geiger the fierce server and Steve Garvich. AARP(2) team members are l-r front: Doug Geiger, Steve Garvich, back Randy Martin, Jeff Potter, Bob Lonneman.
The EAST was well represented by the "Clinic", with the Poe girls who finished in 3rd.
Special guest appearance on team Thesenvitz, headed by Greg and Sarah Thesenvitz, included friend and UW volleyball alumnus, national champ and 2007 USA Women’s National Volleyball Team member Courtney Thompson A newly formed team of now young adults (freshly 18) we'll be hearing more from was headed by residents Kurt Geiger and Meagan Ganzer, with friends Aaron Roessler, Bryon Martin and Bryce Mudroch. Meagan will be playing volleyball at WSU
this coming year. Unfortunately their single elimination came at
the hands of the day's winners, shortening their debut. Many
fans came by to watch and cheer, and the weather held for a
great day of Volleyball Fun! Truly a 'blast' on July 4th.
Thanks, Kris & Wes.

Some History For You
The natural dam at the outlet was destroyed in 1950 when a developer cleared the outlet to drain the lake to a level that would allow the “Boot” to dry out and become building lots. Lake Sawyer property owners sued and the court required Vern Cole Realty to reestablish the lake level by building a man-made barrier at the outlet to replace the natural dam that was destroyed. The new dam (referred to as a weir) was owned and maintained by the Washington State Department of Hydraulics. When that department was abolished, its responsibilities were absorbed by the Department of Fisheries. In 1956 the responsibility for maintenance was assigned to a local homeowner on the weir (H.B Sovie). When Mr. Sovie died, and the weir fish ladder needed repair, the Department of Fisheries met with some homeowners on the canal.
A permit for repair was issued and in October, 1993, maintenance responsibility
was assigned to Mike Cline, who lives on the outlet.
In a memo to City Councilman George McPherson (December, 2007) Dennis Clark of WIRA, recommended “clarification of responsibility for management of the structure". He felt it would be appropriate and desirable for the City of Black Diamond to monitor or schedule the biannual reconfiguration so it is not neglected if Mike steps down from the council (which he did in 2008) or isn’t able to continue doing this.” Since Mr. Cline continues to monitor the weir and ladder, the City hasn't taken any steps to officially take over the maintenance.
The Lake Sawyer Community Club was not formed until 1961, although there was a group called the Lake Sawyer Improvement Club formed in 1948, which was disbanded several years later. Since the annexation of Lake Sawyer to the City of Black Diamond in 1998, the City has owned the weir.

XTERRA Black Diamond Triathlon
The XTERRA Triathlon was a huge success. Many that participated
said it was "Brutal". Judging by the pictures, which you can view along with the results at
www.xterrablackdiamond.com
there was plenty of blood, sweat, tears, and mud to go
around. If you are interested in the next cross country
triathlon or to keep up with what the local XTERRA team is
doing, check out
