We all wait year to year for the fun and festivities brought about by the Fourth of July on Lake Sawyer. The Fourth of July Committee has been hard at work to assure that once again we have a Fourth to remember! To you newcomers on the Lake, this is what the lake community is all about: friends and fun! This edition of the Lake Sawyer News contains the schedule of events and hopefully everything you need to know about our celebration. If you have any questions please feel free to call Dave Peters (360-886-2077) or Sam Kerley (253-631-2939). Sunday July 2nd
10:00AM Registration 9:30AM At The Clubhouse This particular event has grown in size with every year. It is a great time no matter your abilities. It has something for everyone. The course is 5.2 miles. We go forward rain or shine (and we all know what that means). Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Check-in and registration is at 9:30 a.m. at the clubhouse. The "race" will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Walkers are to begin first, with runners and bikers beginning one-half hour later, at 10:30 a.m. Bicyclists must adhere to the rules of the road and must wear helmets. Participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver at check-in and a parent must sign for minors. If you don’t want to run, walk or bike, how about volunteering to help at the start or finish lines direct traffic, or operate a water station? Please call Robert Schueler at 206-226-7979 if you wish to help.Tuesday July 4th Have a great time & BE SAFE. Remind your guests of Lake Sawyer regulations: 8 mph speed limit except between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the 4th. Boats and personal watercraft must travel in a counterclockwise direction. You must stay 100 feet from all other watercraft, buoys and persons, and 200 feet from shore. ENJOY!!!
All Day. "Summer Olympics" is the theme for this years celebration. Please help liven up this day with the color of 4th of July & the Summer Olympics. Prizes for the best house/yard will be awarded. Judging to take place sometime around midday. 8:00AM to 11:00AM The 6-buoy slalom course is set up at the south end of the lake. Anyone interested in some friendly competition should meet there no later than 7:45 a.m. on the rafts that will be set up near the course. A $5 entry fee will be taken at check-in the morning of the competition. Pre-registration is encouraged. Please call BOB ROTHCHILDS at 360-886-2872. Spectators are welcome, but PLEASE, NO WAKE. The water must be kept as "flat" as possible. Lake Sawyer obtains a special permit for this event which allows only the two boats towing the skiers in this event to exceed the normal 8 mph speed limit usually enforced during these hours. Any other boats exceeding that limit will be ticketed. Black Diamond Marine Patrol will be on duty during the competition to ensure everyone’s safety.
10:00AM to 6:00PM Kids 14 years and younger - bring your prize winning fish to the dock of DAN HUCKE (360-886-2626), second house in the boot on the north side. His dock will be marked with a fish flag. Anyone older that 14 will be in the "adult" category. Maybe you all can catch the "one that got away!"
12:00PM Preregister your team by July 3 to guarantee a spot. Call DOUG or JULIE GEIGER (886-2834). Register your team of six. Doug and Julie will find a team for individuals who want to play. Its East vs. West, so when you register let them know which side of the lake you are on. Organize your best team of neighbors, family or friends to represent your side of the lake for Single Elimination play. All skill levels welcome. With enough teams we hope to have a Teen, a 'Picnic', and a Competitive bracket. The event will take place at GEIGER'S PARK, 29837 - 232nd Ave SE. For practice time contact DOUG and JULIE. Everyone is welcome to cheer on your favorite team.
3:20PM Two separate races will be held: (1) paddleboats; and (2) canoes and kayaks. You may enter as an individual or as a team. Racers should meet between the two big islands in front of Sunrise Resort approximately 10 minutes prior to the starting gun. No need to preregister. Call FRANK and JEAN GARDINER (360-886-1406) for more information. If you don’t plan to participate, but have a vessel you might be willing to lend, please call Jean or Frank.
5:00PM "Summer Olympics" will be the theme of this this year’s boat parade where each boat gets to "go for the gold". Every boat who participates in the parade will receive a little something, and prizes will be given for the best decorated boats. Join the fun. This is a great event for the whole lake to enjoy (participants and spectators alike). The judges will be the lucky folks spending the 4th of July at the ROHRBACH residence. Uncle Sam (aka Don Erickson) will lead the parade. All boats should meet approximately 10 minutes before the start time at the ROHRBACHS’ dock (east shore, middle). Call POLLY ROHRBACH (253-630-0803) if you have any questions.
10:00PM Always the highlight of our festivities! The display will be as close to the middle of the Lake as possible to optimize viewing for everyone. Remember that if you plan to view the fireworks from a boat you must stay 400 feet from the fireworks launch raft. Black Diamond Marine Patrol will be on duty during the event and will send any vessels back to their docks who are not displaying proper lights, correct number and style of lifevests, or those that are overloaded. Expect one of our happy volunteers to stop by your home to get your fireworks donations. If you haven’t seen anyone yet and would like to be sure your donation gets in on time, please call CINDY WHEELER at 360-886-1472. We will also have a donation jar at the LAKE SAWYER STORE. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their cooperation in letting us use their store as a donation site. Lake Sawyer Park Citizens’ Committee We have been keeping track of the planning efforts for the Lake Sawyer
Regional Park. A consultant has been selected and hired to guide
the county through the planning process. One of the first things
they will be doing is selecting a citizens’ committee to provide input
into the planning process. They are working on an application for
interested citizens to complete. They will be publishing that application
in various locations and sending copies to those who have previously expressed
an interest, including those who signed up as interested at the meeting
we had with the county at the Clubhouse. If you want to make sure
you get an application, you may wish to contact Sharon Claussen at Sharon.Claussen@METROKC.GOV.
