Black Diamond Leash Law

It has been noticed that there is an increase in dogs running loose in our neighborhoods. This is a reminder that the city of Black Diamond does have a leash law and it is the pet owner’s responsibility to ensure that the pet is properly secured.  For problems  with stray or uncontrollable dogs contact King County Animal Control (KCAC) at (206) 296-7387, or, if you get no resolution from KCAC contact Black Diamond Police Dept.  Please make our neighborhoods safe for young kids, walkers and bicycle riders.  Thanks.

Spring 2001 Non-Dock Party May 20th @ 4:00PM

Do you know what a dock party is?  It’s when Lake Sawyer residents gather (preferably arriving by boat!) for a party at various peoples homes in the summer.  Well, it ain’t summer  and a non-dock party ain’t a dock party.  The only difference is you’ll have to walk, bike or drive and there’s no lovely lake view.  But there will be lots of lovely people there!
Get together with your lake neighbors for friendly banter and dinner on Sunday May 20th at 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Sawyer Community Clubhouse.  There will be door prizes and lots of fun to be had!  Children are welcome.  Lasagna, bread, plates, utensils, cups and napkins  will be provided  by Lake Sawyer Community Club.  Mark your calendars for the big weekend - Road and clubhouse cleanup on Saturday and a fun get-together on Sunday.   Bring your own beverage and a dish to share.  If your last name starts with:
A-H:  Bring a salad, I-Q: Bring a dessert,  R-Z:  Bring an appetizer
For dinner planning purposes please RSVP to Julie Geiger (360)886-2834 or Cindy Kerley (253)631-2939 by Thursday May 17th.

Update on Lake Sawyer Regional Park

Planning continues for the 163-acre county park at the south end of Lake Sawyer.  Within the park boundaries, the King County planning group has identified 38.6 acres suitable for active recreation such as baseball or soccer, 60.5 acres suitable for passive recreation such as picnic areas, and 63.5 acres suitable for natural area conservation and appreciation.  The planning group has solicited public opinion in a variety of ways, including at a public meeting held last November 9 at the Lake Wilderness county facility.
On February 22, 2001, King County personnel met with the Community Advocacy Group (CAG) and provided a status report and an indication of where they plan on going from here.  Several lake residents are on the CAG.  The county indicated that it is their plan to balance recreation use with conservation of the natural resources and character of the site.  They are now working on a preliminary design for the Master Plan that will include (subject to change):
1. Limited waterfront development such as walking trails and fishing areas.  No motorized boat launch is anticipated.
2. Trails, including a multi-use (hiking, biking, and equestrian) trail as part of the Green to Cedar Regional Trail system, internal walking trails, and interpretive trails.
3. Interpretive and educational areas for groups and classrooms.
4. Open grassy areas for informal recreational activities as well as picnic areas.
5. It is anticipated that active recreation areas will eventually be placed on the site.  Many local residents have argued strongly against such use.  Separate from our park-specific planning, it was determined that a countywide study of recreational need was needed.  So, a Commission has been appointed to study recreation needs throughout the county.  That study is not expected to be completed until May 2002.  Therefore, planning for the Lake Sawyer park will go forward at this time without any specific design for sports fields.  Do not be misled into thinking that a decision has been made not to have fields, as no such decision has been made.  Areas will be set aside in the Master Plan for eventual field development or possibly other use.
6. There was strong public interest expressed in an off-leash dog area.  It is not anticipated that one will be included in the plans for the Lake Sawyer park.  Other areas in South King County are being studied for that use.

When the preliminary design is completed, there will be additional meetings with the CAG and also more public meetings.  Stay informed and do show up for the public meetings.  We can’t make a difference if we don’t participate.
Dock Numbers Are Coming

Black Diamond Police Office Kevin Esping and a crew of Lake Sawyer residents will begin putting numbers on docks beginning the week of May 7. A new ordinance will be approved by the City Council . Each plat has been assigned a number. These numbers, along with house addresses are being tied into the 911 system. If there is a call to Lake Sawyer for emergency vehicles, not only will your street address show up on their screen, but also the dock number so the Marine Patrol Officer can respond from the lake. For additional information, contact the Black Diamond Police Department or Janie Edelman at 360-886-7166 (email: ovrachevr@aol.com).

Current Happenings within our City Hall

A quick look on current topic being discussed at the City Council Meeting.

  • Regional Park.  Nothing has happened since our meeting with the Parks department at Lake Wilderness.  It was evident at that meeting that the citizens of Lake Sawyer were concerned for traffic, noise and light pollution.  It appeared that the Parks department was surprised at the response they received from the area residents.
  • Once a year the City is allowed to amend their comprehensive plan.  Two proposals for amendments have been submitted, and are currently before the planning commission for review before being presented to the council.  For Information please contact a member of the planning commission, or call City Hall.
  • The City is working on improvements for Lake Sawyer Park that include parking fees for autos with trailers.  These fees will be distributed to the Parks department, Police Department and used for water quality testing.  The idea of this is to have people that use the lake but don’t live here help pay for some of the costs involved by their use of the lake.
  • The Office of Surface Mining has sited the John Henry Mine for unauthorized dumping within the mine.  This is outside of the city limits, but obviously has the potential for impacting the lake and creeks.  It has not been determined that the material dumped was hazardous, but it was apparently dumped without OSM knowledge.  The mine is appealing.
For more information about any of these issues please call City Hall at at 360-886-2560
Home Address Identification

Imagine having to call for emergency medical, fire, or police services. Imagine this bad situation then turning into a nightmare because emergency personnel can't find your house! The Black Diamond Fire Department is encouraging everyone to PLEASE clearly mark addresses on your house, as well as at the STREET-END of your driveway. It's almost impossible to see an address that may be well marked on your house if your driveway is long, or the numbers are obscured by vegetation, vehicles, darkness, etc.
Mailboxes are NOT a good indicator of where your house is - especially for those who share driveways, or whose mailbox is across the street from their house. So please help us find you by getting those addresses marked as soon as possible. It could save your life! For more information and recommendations, contact Lori Fahey, Fire Prevention/Public Education Officer, Black Diamond Fire Department.
