LAKE SAWYER NEWS November 2003 Lake Sawyer Community Club P.O. Box 191 Black Diamond, WA 98010 www.lakesawyer.org Inside This Issue
As a warm up for the big day, Santa will be making the trip from the North Pole to Lake Sawyer on December 14th to bring Candy Canes to all the good boys and girls. Santa will fly in on his sleigh and then switch to his boat because reindeer do not float. The Santa Boat will set sail at 4:00 from dock 36 (The Geiger House) on the east side of the lake. This year Santa has decided to head clockwise around the lake. If you would like to have Santa deliver a present to your child or children, please arrange to drop them off at Santa’s Northwest Annex, aka the Geiger House (29837 232nd Ave SE) by December 12th. Please contact Julie Geiger at 360-886-2834. To ensure that Santa’s boat will not be overloaded and violate Coast Guard regulations, please, one gift per child and keep the gifts smaller than a bread box. Due to an incident on a different lake, Santa has announced that he will not be able to deliver live animals this year. Santa will not be able to deliver presents to the boat launch. This year Santa will only be able to stop at the docks of current Club members. To ensure that he does not get confused, please have your Club membership plaque firmly attached to your dock. Santa will also be accepting donations of food for the Black Diamond Food Bank. Please be generous to help those that are less fortunate. Anticipating that the lake residents will be generous, Santa is looking for places to unload his boat as he makes his round. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Steve Garvich at 360-886-1837 or Cindy Wheeler at 360-886-1472. In case of poor weather that will prevent Santa from making his rounds
safely, meet him at the Lake Sawyer Community Club house between 5 and
6:30. If Santa will not be able to set sail, you can check the web
site or call 360-886-2834 after 3:00.
Help make the holiday season brighter for those in need. The Lake Sawyer Community Club will again be sponsoring a giving tree at the Lake Sawyer Grocery Store. The tree, with tags indicating a needed gift, will be in the store on November 20th. All gifts should be wrapped, with the tag attached, and returned to the store by Saturday, December 20th. Gifts will be given to local Black Diamond families. See the tree for more information. Yard Decoration Contest Santa will be keeping an eye out for more then good girls and boys when he visits Lake Sawyer on December 14th. He will also be checking out the yard decorations and will be awarding prizes to the best decorated yards. 4th of July Celebration Returns to Lake Sawyer Next Year! The Community Club has secured new insurance and absolutely ALL of the Independence Day Celebration activities are covered! The insurance is good for one year and the renewal date is in August. This will allow the Club a whole bunch more time to secure insurance if the company decides to non-renew us. 4th of July Contributions Thank you to all who donated at the Lake Sawyer Store for the 4th of July. We received $164.48; $16.48 in coins and $148.00 in small bills. There were not any checks or application forms to indicate where these donations came from, so thank you to all who did contribute at the store. Adopt-A-Road Cleanup On October 11 a bunch of people led by Jean Boston cleaned up 216th Ave and 288th Street. This time, 30 bags of garbage were collected. This is less then was picked up in the spring. Thanks go out to those that have been keeping the streets clean during the summer. Analysis of the garbage by a consultant showed that cigarette butts were by far the most popular item. Thanks to all of the volunteers, the roads look a lot better. Boat Ramp The Black Diamond City Utility Department briefly closed the Lake Sawyer Park boat launch for safety reasons on October 15th. A portion of the ramp has deteriorated, resulting n the presence of a number of sharp steel “dagger-like” points protruding up from the ramp. These protrusions presented a serious safety concern for those launching boats and were certainly not tire friendly. Temporary repairs were made by cutting off and removing the protrusions. The city plans a permanent fix. It is anticipated that the boat launch will remain open while the permanent repair is engineered, permitted with the Washington State Fisheries Department and installed. No timeline for this work has been established. Those with questions may contact Dan Dal Santo, Public Works Supervisor at 360-886-2560. Water Safety Committee The City of Black Diamond is interested in setting up a water safety committee. The kick-off meeting was held on November 5th at the Black Diamond City Hall. The committee is looking for volunteers. Interested parties should contact Rick Luther at bdpd@comcast.net. The next meeting is planned for December 3rd at the Black Diamond City Hall. LSCC Membership Please feel free to make your 4th of July donation now to help The Board plan the funding for the events, including the fireworks. Lake Sawyer Dock Party Huge Success Let a board member know if you would like to host a dock party next summer. It's a great way to meet your neighbors. Lake Sawyer Community Club Hosts Candidate Forum Black Diamond candidates making a run for three positions on the Black Diamond City Council gathered before a crowd of approximately 40 community members at Lake Sawyer Community Club to answer questions put before them. Moderator Steve Garvich asked a set of five questions in random order of each candidate. Candidates responding to each question included incumbents Mario Sorci, Position #1; Michael Cline, Pos. #3; George McPherson, Pos. #5; and challengers Anna Marie Morris, Pos. 1; Barry Kombol, Pos. 3; Robert Kemmer and write-in candidate Manfred Stamm, Pos. 5. Following the questioning, candidates fielded questions from the floor by citizen. Club Web Site Info 2003 LSCC BOARD OF TRUSTEES Elected Positions
